A cycle is defined as something that happens over and over again. In this case, we are talking about nutrient cycles. A nutrient cycle can be broken down into two parts; when a plant absorbs the nutrient from its environment (exposure) and then how it uses it (absorption and utilization). If a nutrient element is not utilized correctly, it will build up in your soil and may cause detrimental effects to other plants and microorganisms. This could lead to soil depletion and poor health of the plant. As mentioned before, a nutrient cycle begins with exposure and ends with utilization.

Exposure: What happens when a plant comes into contact with a nutrient?

In order to absorb the nutrient, the root of the plant needs to come into contact with it. When the roots come into contact with the nutrient, the pores on the surface of the root release water molecules. These molecules travel through the plant's xylem system until they reach the leaves.

Utilization: How does the plant use the absorbed nutrient?

When a plant takes in a nutrient, it stores it in the vacuoles of cells. Vacuoles are the space inside a cell where nutrients are stored. Once the plant has taken in a nutrient, it will utilize it. There are three ways a plant utilizes nutrients: storage, transport, and structural. Storage includes the accumulation of nutrients for later use. Transport involves transporting these elements from the roots to the rest of the plant. Structural refers to building a stronger structure for their body.
